Playing Games With The Brain

Host: Lauren Meltzer

Producer: Lauren Meltzer

Have you ever wondered how you might ramp up the power of your brain? Indeed, researchers here in the Bay Area have been proving that tools, games and software can improve brain health and brain performance. Their research is based on neuroplasticity, the ability of the brain and nervous system in all species to change structurally and functionally as a result of input from the environment. What are the basic brain mechanisms that make plasticity work? Who can benefit from the cognitive training? And what are the limitations?

Guests:

  • Dr. Adam Gazzaley, Associate Professor of Neurology, Physiology and Psychiatry at UCSF. Also Director of the Neuroscience Imaging Center. He is the Principal Investigator of a cognitive neuroscience laboratory studying the neural mechanisms of perception, attention and memory, with an emphasis on distraction and multitasking.
  • Joe Hardy, Vice President of Research and Development at Lumos Labs
  • Sophia Vinogradov Chief of Mental Health Service at San Francisco VA medical Center and Professor of Psychiatry at UCSF.
  •  Anett Yurak, post-doctoroal scholar at Stanford University. Her research interests are focused on emotion regulation; its neurological, physiological and behavioral components.
