Monday Hearts for Madalene: Making art to heal grief

Today is Valentine’s Day. To celebrate we want to share with you a love story set here in the Bay Area.
It’s about an artist who many people around the music scene have known for decades. Page Hodel. She was one of the Bay’s most popular DJs in the 1980s and 90s. In fact, Page is featured in a in a new photo exhibitcelebrating that golden age of San Francisco nightlife, at the GLBT Historical Society. One of the iconic images shows her spinning at a club called The Box.

Well, Page had a life outside of the music scene, of course. And this story is part of that life.

"I just made a heart out of some of the flowers that were in my garden...and she must have said something that alerted me that she really liked it, and so I had the idea that I'm going to do this every Monday."

You can see photos of the Monday Hearts at mondayheartsformadalene.com.

This story originally aired in September 2010.
