The tradition (and twist) behind the steps of Ballet Folklórico México Danza

Nopal Media

Hayward's Ballet Folkórico México Danza started out as an after-school program for local kids to learn traditional Mexican dance. Since 1991, it's grown to over 100 members, including teenage and adult companies.

Alexa Chavez has been dancing with the company since she was 7. She came to KALW to talk about how she got involved and about the history of México Danza in the Bay.

"Our dances are meant to be seen on stage. They're meant to be performed as a spectacle. They're meant to give people a lot to see."

The company will be performing as part of the Oakland Ballet’s East Bay Dances, a showcase celebrating the area’s diverse dance community, on Sunday June 3.
