A vision persists: Remembering Paul Clipson

Experimental filmmaker Paul Clipson lived in San Francisco, and died last Saturday, leaving behind a fascinating body of work.

 

In one of his recent films, "https://vimeo.com/109943175" target="_blank">Made of Air," he collaborated with the musician Grouper to create a minimalist soundscape that melds with Clipson's layered images of light, water, and sky. It's a moving meditation on nature and perception.

 

Ashley Bellouin, a collaborator and close friend of Clipson's, described him as "utterly in love with film ... giddy with excitement whenever he saw an interesting light reflection, or beautiful sunset, running up the streets of San Francisco to get the perfect shot." 

 

In "Love after Love," Clipson's dreamlike and impressionistic images are almost a balm for modern life's constant stream of frenetic visual stimulation. The piece was produced in collaboration with musician Jefre Cantu-Ledesma (Tarentel):
