Mother Jones reporter Shane Bauer has spent time in an Iranian prison, gone undercover as a guard at a maximum security prison in Louisiana, and recently embedded with militiamen patrolling the U.S. border with Mexico.

For his body of work, the Oakland-based reporter was named Journalist of the Year last week by the Society of Professional Journalists of Northern California. Hana Baba sat down with him in KALW’s studio to talk about his latest report—going undercover as a border militiaman in Arizona.
