California city bans could be corrected soon… Who smokes what, where? … Teens, cannabis and I.Q…. “Pot purses” arrive… Events, Opinion and more.

LEGALIZATION & LEGISLATION

Analysis: What’s behind the city bans on cannabis? //  Whittier Daily News  “Many California cities in the last two months have moved to ban the cultivation of marijuana but these new ordinances may become unnecessary under proposed legislation that seeks to close what some say was a loophole in a series of new state laws passed last year.” [See next story.]

Senate bill expected to correct March 1 loophole // The Union  “The state Senate could vote as early as Monday on AB 21, which would remove a March 1 deadline that has caused many cities and counties to quickly pass local land-use ordinances regarding marijuana. The bill would proceed from there to the state Assembly and then the governor’s desk, if approved by both chambers.”

BUSINESS

Out-of-state meddlers behind Colorado lawsuits to overturn legalization // The Cannabist  Funds are welcomed by those fighting the current legal status, but “supporters of the law that made the recreational use and sale of marijuana legal in Colorado say the money gives outsized influence to secretive coalitions of drug-rehab professionals, for-profit prison owners and others with a financial stake in keeping pot illegal.”

What’s that smell? Cover it with “pot purses” // Washington Post  “These handbags and clutches — under the AnnaBis brand name — have a dedicated place for everything, from pipes to eye drops and breath mints. The bags are lined with an odor-blocking resin used in food preparation and medical technology — to keep a lid on weed’s telltale aroma.”

HEALTH

Who smokes what, where?  // Pressreader Nor Cal prefer a zippy ride, So Cal likes a more laid-back experience. Mother’s Day is a downer for deliveries; 4/20 is a bonanza.

Teens, cannabis & I.Q. // NORML  “After researchers adjusted for potentially confounding variables, such as childhood depression and cigarette use, [British investigators] reported, “’[T]hose who had used cannabis [greater than or equal to] 50 times did not differ from never-users on either IQ or educational performance’.”

EVENTS

“The first virtual Cannabis Health Summit // Cannabishealthsummit  Online event January 23 & 24 expects to feature doctors, scientists and others. [But where’s the after party? – Ed.]

Big music lineup announced for SoCal Cannabis Cup //East Bay Express  The event is planned over the last weekend in January and the first one in February. Music acts include De La Soul, Wiz Khalifa, The Roots and many more. Oh! There will also be “thousands of different medical marijuana products, formulations, and accessories on display, for sale, or given away at the sprawling event, which takes place about an hour outside of Los Angeles in the City of San Bernardino.”

OPINION

Time for NFL to permit medical marijuana // Alternet  New England Patriots defensive lineman Chandler Jones had a bad reaction to synthetic marijuana, one that could likely have been avoided if he was permitted to use the real thing.

IN OTHER NEWS….

What do we want? Reform! When do we want it…? // The Weed Blog  No Presidential candidates are willing to address marijuana reform, NORML says, so since “change begins on the local level, be the catalyst for marijuana reform in your community.”
