A conversation with two-time Mavericks surf champion Grant "Twiggy" Baker

Ben Trefny
The Mavericks champ in the garage of fellow big-wave surfer, and sometimes housemate, Ryan Seelbach

Big wave surfer Grant "Twiggy" Baker talks about San Francisco's Ocean Beach, his thought process in taking on the world's biggest waves, and life after competitive surfing in this interview with KALW's Ben Trefny.

BAKER: "For me, I wouldn't want to be tackled by one of those American football players, because that's going to break me in half. But if you take the biggest, strongest American football player and put him out at Mavericks, he's going to have a tough time. Everything is relative, you know. Snowboarding, going fast on a snowboard, it's the same type of feeling. So even though it looks like what we're doing is completely crazy, I'm sure everybody has something in their lives that they get the same kind of feeling and rush from."
