Audiograph's Sound of the Week: Small Dog Beach Walk

All week long we've been playing you this sound, and asking you to guess what exactly it is and where exactly in the Bay Area we recorded it.

This auditory guessing game is part of our new project, Audiograph, a crowd-sourced collaborative radio project mapping the sonic signature of each of the Bay Area’s nine counties. By using the sounds of voices, nature, industry, and music, Audiograph tells the story of where you live, and the people who live there with you. Every Thursday, we reveal the origins of that week's sound on Crosscurrents, and here in weekly blog posts. Onwards to the answer...

SUZANNE ARTEMOFF: That's Yogi. He's a little black and tan chihuaua mix. We're at Ocean Beach and we're at the Small Dog Beach Walk. This happens every Saturday and it's for dogs usually about twenty pounds and under. I tell everybody I know, you know, that I see, "Oh, you have a little dog! Do you know about the Small Dog." "Why no I don't!" I'm like, "Oh my god, you're missing out!" And the next thing I now, they show up and they tell their friends. We have people that come from all the way from Sonoma.

JULIE CAINE: Why small dogs in particular? Why can't all size of dogs go?

SUZANNE ARTEMOFF: Some small dogs have insecurities with being around bigger dogs. And then this way they feel more secure if they're around people their own size.

Congratulations to this week's winner, Zach Slobig. We'll have a new sound for you to guess and another chance to win next week.

In the meantime, is there a sound from your life that should be featured on Audiograph? Call at 415-264-7106 and tell us about the sound of where you live.
