This past Saturday, over 100 people gathered outside Lakeview Elementary School in Oakland for a rally in support of a sit-in staged by parents, students, and community members. They’re protesting the district’s decision to close five neighborhood elementary schools.
Nick Palmquist is an afterschool coordinator at ASCEND school, and one of the organizers of the rally. “This is a parent and teacher-led sit-in, so we have parents, teachers, educators in the city here, and we have other folks, supporters coming out. We have lots of folks from Lakeview, other schools and community schools around us,” said Palmquist.
This sit-in is one of the latest ways communities have reacted to increasing school budget cuts and closures. KALW’s Jen Chien was there and brought back this report.
