A new and unusual conflict between the U.S. Postal Service and the California agency responsible for upholding elections is evolving. Last month, California Fair Political Practices Commission filed a lawsuit against the U.S.P.S. after the post office refused to provide information that the commission needed for an investigation. Meanwhile, the California Public Utilities Commission is revisiting a $3 million settlement it reached with PG&E last year. PG&E was fined for its failure to produce gas pipeline safety records after the 2010 San Bruno disaster. Critics of the company say that the fine is too small…

A well-known Berkeley-based scientist and climate change specialist Peter Gleick revealed some public record problems of his own. Gleick admitted to using a false name to obtain confidential fundraising information from Chicago’s Heartland Institute, a think tank known for minimizing the risks of global warming, and publishing them online.
