Why are violent racist groups able to grow and operate in the US?

Hate crime reports to the FBI jumped 17 percent last year. In the new PBS Frontline documentary “Documenting Hate: New American Nazis,” reporter A.C. Thompson investigates white supremacist groups in the US.

He focuses on Atomwaffen Division, a neo-nazi group that actively recruits inside the US military. It operates a so-called “leaderless resistance,” encouraging attacks that look like lone-wolf operations, but are part of a bigger movement. Why are these violent racist movements still able to operate and expand?
