Why Are So Many Inmates Dying In East Bay Jails?

Aug 29, 2019

Contra Costa County jail officials are investigating a recent in custody death at the Martinez Detention Facility earlier this month. That inmate is the third person to die inside the jail so far this year.

"When you see a high rate of suicides or overdoses it can be a suggestion that there may be inadequate medical care happening in these jails."

Independent journalist Scott Morris has reported on the outrage over these deaths for the East Bay Express. He says this is not the only jail system in the East Bay under heavy scrutiny from advocates. Morris also investigated in custody deaths in Alameda County.

The film 'What Happened to Dijuan Armstrong?' will premier at the First Unitarian Church of Oakland on Friday, August 30. The film details Barbara Doss' search to discover the details of her son's death at Santa Rita jail.
