Where do the best learn to fly fish? The Golden Gate Park casting club.

Aug 29, 2018

From our Audiograph archives:

Last week, 14-year-old Maxine McCormick won a pair of gold medals at the world championships in England: for women’s trout accuracy and for salmon distance. So where does a girl go to learn to be the very best? The Golden Gate Angling and Casting Club in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park.

That’s where Maxine learned to flick her wrist just right, and that’s where KALW Audio Academy Alumn Ian Lewis went a few years ago to learn the tricks of the trade.

"I'm just here to work on my stroke, you know, like golfers do, it's the same thing with fishing, you know?"

Fly casting is a form of fishing, where you cast out your line with a fake fly at the end and you try to land it in the water near the fish. Or, if you’re just casting, near the target.

This story originally aired in February of 2016 as part of our Audiograph series, a radio project mapping the Bay Area’s sonic signature. Audiograph tells the story of where you live and the people who live there with you.
