We’ve made it to Memorial Day Weekend, and the Bay Area is buzzing with events, like Carnaval in the Mission neighborhood and remembrance ceremonies throughout the area. We’ve selected a few picks, off the beaten path, to check out this weekend.
The tucked away, waterfront hamlet of Port Costa will transform into a town-wide yard sale this Saturday. Expect unique gadgets, fancy whirligigs, and all manner of weird things on offer by folks from all over the Bay Area. It’s like the Museum of Oakland’s White Elephant Sale, but outdoors with a decent view of the bay as a backdrop. Sale opens at 9:00 a.m., and will close down at 4:00 p.m.
Then, Saturday evening, Very Be Careful headlines Oakland’s Legionnaire Saloon. Groups La Ceiba and Bombalele will also play. If you were hoping to see Very Be Careful this evening in San Francisco, please note that that show has actually been cancelled, but you’ll have your chance to dance it out on Saturday. Live music starts at 9:30 p.m. at 2272 Telegraph Avenue in Oakland. This event is 21 and over.
On Sunday, you’re invited to join the Bay Area Burmese Community for the annual Burmese New Year Water Festivalin Union City. The Thingyan Water Festival is celebrated widely in Myanmar and marks the start of the Burmese New Year which occurs in mid-April. At Sunday’s festivities in Union City, there will be a water play area, a fashion show, traditional dance performances, music, and traditional food. From 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at John F. Kennedy Park.
