Our suggestions for what to do in the Bay Area this weekend span the cinematic, the aerodynamic, and the pop-tastic.
Tonight, Youth Impact Hub Oakland presents the 2ndAnnual Black & Brown Unity Film Festival. It will be an evening of cinema made by some of Oakland's best Black and Brown independent filmmakers. Among the films tonight, the premiere of the new Black Panther film, "My People Are Rising,” featuring Aaron Dixon, Elaine Brown, Bobby Seale, and Ericka Huggins. Doors open at 5:00 p.m., and the screening will begin at 6:00 p.m. at United Roots, 2781 Telegraph Avenue in Oakland.
SF Pop Festis happening throughout the weekend. Now, this is my kind of music festival: sugary, guitar-driven pop, performed by local musicians, in small venues. You can see the full lineup of bands and venues at popfestsf.com. I recommend Sunday afternoon’s lineup, there’ll be four bands including Oakland-based duo Horrible/Adorable, and DJs too. Doors open at 4:00 p.m. at the Knock-Out on Mission Street in San Francisco.
Also on Sunday, the Bay Area’s butterflies and birds will have their own party. The East Bay Regional Parks District will host the 17thAnnual Butterfly & Bird Festival in Fremont. The event offers a day of adventure and learning about native flying critters. Enjoy garden tours, hands-on activities, educational speakers, food, music, and more. 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Coyote Hills Regional Park off Patterson Ranch Road in Fremont.
