Weekend Go-Tos for July 22, 2016

Clody Cates
22nd Annual Brainwash Movie Festival wants you to drive, bike, and walk right up!

Let us help you make the most of the upcoming sunny weekend with our recommendations of unique and cheap things to do around the Bay Area.

Two Bay Area cultural festivals are celebrating their 22nd year of operation.  First up, LaborFest, which brings together unionists, unorganized workers, and supporters of labor education and history together, are presenting a lineup of films, conversations, and live performances throughout the greater Bay Area. My LaborFest 2016 pick is a film screening tonight of Limpiadores, a documentary focused on the migrant labor force who work at some of London’s most prestigious universities. The film starts at 7:00 p.m. at the San Jose Peace & Justice Center, 48 S. 7th St., San Jose. Full venue and event listings for this year’s LaborFest can be found at laborfest.net.

If you’d like to stick closer to San Francisco tonight, the 22ndAnnual Brainwash Drive-In Movie Festival kicks off at the Nimby art space in Oakland. Everyone’s invited to park their car or bike or just walk right up, and watch a collection of weird and unusual short films, projected outdoors. You can find the full listing for this year’s festival at brainwashm.com. Tonight’s show starts at 9:00pm, located at 8410 Amelia Street in Oakland. If you miss it, there’s also tomorrow night, and next Friday and Saturday, July 29th and 31st.

If you prefer your media in a printed and bound form, this weekend, 35,000 sq. feet of San Francisco’s Dogpatch Neighborhood will be transformed into a world inhabited exclusively by art books and art book publishers and enthusiasts. Available for perusal and purchase: one-of-a-kind handmade books, monographs, periodicals, zines, printed ephemera all presented by local folks who can’t get enough of creating detailed, printed, and bound art. See it all at the inaugural San Francisco Art Book Fair, this Saturday and Sunday starting at 11am at 1275 Minnesota Street in San Francisco Find full details at sfartbookfair.com.

Is there an event happening this weekend that you'd like folks to know about? Feel free to add it below in the comments section.
