Weekend Go-Tos for February 5, 2016

Our City: Oakland Public Design Fair's goal is to inspire work that re-imagines the future of the city as a place for play.

Looking for something fun and unique to do this weekend? Check out our suggestions for the weekend of February 5, 2016.

No matter your opinion on Valentine’s Day celebrations, hopefully we can all agree that letterpressing is a pretty cool skill to learn. Tomorrow afternoon, the San Francisco Public Library’s Main Branch hosts the 5th Annual Valentine Broadside Printing Event, which includes a workshop on letterpressing your own valentines. Come experience printing on the library’s 1909 Albion handpress and take home a unique keepsake for your Valentine... or for yourself, ‘cause you deserve it. Festivities will run from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. in the San Francisco History Center on the 6th floor of the library.

If you head to downtown Oakland tomorrow, stop by the Frank H. Ogawa Plaza and take a few minutes, or more, to play at the first Our City: Oakland Public Design Fair, a celebration of new public design projects that promote play – created by, with, and for the people of Oakland. You’re invited to experience 12 interactive installations, like a pedal-powered musical organ, as well as panel discussions, multiple performances, and a number of interactive play structures for ages 1 to 101. You can see the full line-up of tomorrow’s festivities at the fair’s website.

On Sunday, get ready to HOOT! at Pegasus Books in Berkeley. HOOT! is a concert series that features great, local musicians interpreting classic albums. Sunday’s installment features San Francisco trio The Potrero Hillbillies tackling one of The Kinks' most beloved long-players, The Muzzwell Hillbillies. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Solano Avenue location of Pegasus Books. You can find all the details, and other upcoming HOOT! performances at hootexclamationpoint.com. There, you can pitch your band for an upcoming performance too.

Is there an event happening this weekend that you'd like folks to know about? Feel free to add it below in the comments section.
