Weekend Go-Tos for December 4, 2015

Fling open the doors to imagination with the Department of Make Believe, an interactive storefront and center of magical bureaucracy based in Oakland.

With the holiday season clearly upon us, here are some suggestions for fun things to do around our Bay Area this weekend, whether you loathe or love celebrating winter holidays.

Tonight in Oakland, you’re invited to the grand opening and ribbon cutting extravaganza for the Department of Make Believe. Yes. Make Believe. The department is based inside of Chapter 510, founded by a group of Oakland residents who, inspired by 826 Valencia, wanted to create Oakland’s own literacy project providing in-school tutoring, writing workshops, and publishing opportunities for K-12 students. The celebrations start at 5:00 p.m. at 2301 Telegraph Avenue.

Speaking of 826, tonight at their flagship pirate store on Valencia Street, they’re presenting “The Best Advice in Six Words.” Authors from the Bay Area and beyond will share their six-word advice and backstories to benefit 826 Valencia’s writing and tutoring programs. And the event will end with a "Six-Word Advice Slam." It’s happening 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at 826 Valencia Street.

The Caltrain Holiday Train returns to the peninsula on December 5th and 6th.

Saturday and Sunday, the Caltrain rail lines will be overtaken by holiday cheer. Decorated with 70,000 lights, the Caltrain Holiday Train is one of the world’s largest toy trains and will make its whistle-stop tour of the peninsula and the South Bay, including Redwood City, Burlingame, Mountain View, Santa Clara, Millbrae, San Mateo and more. The train brings a free 20-minute musical show to each of the stations it visits and also collects toy donations for Toys for Tots. To find a full schedule of stops this weekend, visit caltrain.com.
