Weekend Go-Tos for April 8, 2016

Taiko drumming takes the stage at this weekend's Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival.

The weekend is upon us, and we’ve wrangled a few suggestions of events and things worth doing around the Bay Area.

All day Saturday, San Francisco’s Japantown will be home to the 49thAnnual Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival. There will be food booths, Taiko drumming, martial arts, live bands, Japanese games, the annual Queen Program and much more. Festivities kick off on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. on Post Street between Laguna and Fillmore Streets. For more details, check out www.sfcherryblossom.org. And if you can’t make it to the festival this weekend, you’ll have another chance next weekend too.

Kevin Vance - a beloved member of our staff and host of Saturday afternoon’s “A Patchwork Quilt” here on KALW - is facing medical and financial challenges, and his friends are throwing him a big party this Saturday evening to help Kevin tackle his medical costs. There will be musical performances from Eric and Suzy Thompson, Stephen Kent, Blame Sally, and more. That’s this Saturday, 8:00 p.m. at the Ashkenaz in Berkeley. Get your tickets now at ashkenaz.com.

On Sunday afternoon, from 12:00 to 6:00 p.m., Oakland’s Dimond District will host a new art and food festival called Art in the Street. Centered at Champion Street, very close to Fruitvale BART Station. Everyone is invited to come out and enjoy a curated mix of outdoor market stalls from local food and art vendors, with music and kids activities too.

Is there an event happening this weekend that you'd like folks to know about? Feel free to add it below in the comments section.
