World Heart Day

1578 – Tegucigalpa, capital city of Honduras, is claimed by the Spaniards.

1789 – The United States Department of War first establishes a regular army with a strength of several hundred men.

1789 – The 1st United States Congress adjourns.

1951 – The first live sporting event seen coast-to-coast in the United States, a college football game between Duke and the University of Pittsburgh, is televised on NBC.

1957 - The New York Giants played their last game at the Polo Grounds, losing to the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-1. The Giants moved to San Francisco for the next season.

1960 – Nikita Khrushchev, leader of Soviet Union, disrupts a meeting of the United Nations General Assembly with a number of angry outbursts.

1964 – The Argentine comic strip Mafalda is published for the first time.

Mafalda was a strip run in Argentina between 1964 and 1973, created by the great Quino, who used her and her friends to comment on contemporary issues from a child's perspective. Someone once tried to get Mafalda published in the USA, but the answer they got was that 'Mafalda was too sophisticated for children.' That's a damn shame, Mafalda is one of the best comic strips ever created, beloved in South America and many European countries, and she's even an official spokesperson of UNICEF, an incredble honour for a comic book character.

1972 – China–Japan relations: Japan establishes diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China after breaking official ties with the Republic of China.

1975 – WGPR in Detroit, Michigan, becomes the world's first black-owned-and-operated television station.

2008 – Following the bankruptcies of Lehman Brothers and Washington Mutual, The Dow Jones Industrial Average falls 777.68 points, the largest single-day point loss in its history.
