This week on KALW's showcase for the best stories from public radio podcasts and independent radio producers...

It's Thin, It's Plastic, It's Back: Flexi Discs Find New Fans,” produced by Allyson McCabe, originally aired April 2015.

Vinyl records are back on the rise in popularity, surpassing CDs as the most wanted physical format for music, but it’s not just LP’s and 7”’s that are back in fashion. In this story, reporter Allyson McCabe looks into the recent resurgence of a particular fad in the record pressing world that is making newly released vinyl more accessible. And, of course, its popularity has roots here in our Bay Area backyard.

Allyson McCabe is a radio producer and music journalist, and you can find more of her work at her website.

Working Tapes: Part 1,” from the podcast Radio Diaries, originally aired October 2016.

Over the past year, Peabody-Award-Winning podcast Radio Diaries was granted access to previously unshared recordings from the late, great radio documentarian and writer Studs Terkel, particularly the source recordings for his 1974 book, “Working.” Using the raw audio, the Radio Diaries’ team produced a series of episodes looking back at the interviews, and also looking forward to whom the interviewees have become.

Celia y Johnny,” produced by Devon Strolovitch for "Inside the National Recording Registry," originally aired December 2014.

In this story, we’ll head back to 1974 when Cruz teamed with Fania Records’ founder Johnny Pacheco and revolutionized the salsa scene.

That story featured the voices of Marisol Berrios-Miranda, Ana Cristina Reymundo, and Johnny Pacheco. It was produced by Devon Strolovitch for “Inside the National Recording Registry,” a radio series that features the Library of Congress’ most significant recordings.

This week's episode featured music from: Black Moth Super Rainbow, The Ray Camacho Band, Dolly Parton, Mike Selesia, Funk Inc., and Celia Cruz.

Tune in next week for another episode of The Spot, only on KALW San Francisco.
