The Spot: The Value of Celebrity

This week on KALW's showcase for the best stories from public radio podcasts and independent radio producers...

"Non-profits Pay for Star Power," from the podcast Tiny Spark, hosted by Amy Costello, originally aired on June 2015.

I am glad that investigative podcasts like Tiny Spark are around. Host Amy Costello is a former Africa Correspondent for public radio and television, and on Tiny Spark, she asks tough questions of well-intentioned people and programs in an effort to discover how we can "do good" more effectively. In this episode, they're considering this question: Do big-name speakers add value to a charity's bottom line or are they just an “empty calorie high?”

You can find more from Tiny Spark at their website, and subscribe to their podcast on iTunes.

"The Bathtubs or the Boiler Room," produced by Sam Greenspan with Andrea Seabrook for the podcast 99% Invisible, February 2012.

Andrea Seabrook does some fact-checking in the tub.

What sort of story should I follow up a investigative roundtable discussion with? Maybe a story about other ways we value celebrity in our community? Or perhaps a story that looks at fundraising for a non-profit organization? But what did I go with instead: politicians cleaning up. Well, you’ll hear what I mean.

You can find more episodes of 99% Invisible at their website, including a longer cut of the episode featured in today's show. You can also check out Andrea Seabrook's podcast, DecodeDC, oniTunesand at DecodeDC.com.

This week's episode featured music from: Black Moth Super RainbowMulatu Astatke, Maurice & Mac, and The Fabulous Three.

If you have a suggestion for a podcast or an audio project we should feature, please drop us a line at thespot@kalw.org.

Tune in next week for another episode of The Spot, only on KALW San Francisco.
