The Spot: The Secret Road

Stuart Chambers
Recent mudslides near Big Sur kept tourists away from occupying beaches like this one.

This week on KALW's showcase for the best stories from public radio podcasts and independent radio producers...

Big Sur: The Secret Road” from KCRW’s UnFictional, March 2018.

UnFictional is a documentary podcast from KCRW, which tells very personal stories with a lot of sound and heart. Many of which take place here in California.

During a particularly stormy season last year, the snake-like turns of the California 1 was slashed in several places by mudslides. Most notably, in Big Sur, where a portion of the town was cut off from the highway completely.

Last summer, UnFictional producers went searching for the stories of those who have stayed marooned and those that were left behind on the borders, and find out why many weren’t as upset about being cut off as we might think.

The Secret Road was produced by Carla Green and Paulina Velasco, edited by Bob Carlson and Nick White. Subscribe to UnFictional on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, and through links on their website too. That’s also where you can see photos from Carla and Paulina’s journey into Big Sur.

This week's episode featured music from: Black Moth Super Rainbow, Vitamin String Quartet, and The Decemberists.

If you have a suggestion for a podcast or an audio project we should feature, please drop us a line at thespot@kalw.org.

Tune in next week for another episode of The Spot, only on KALW San Francisco.
