The Spot: I Made You a Mixtape

This week on KALW's showcase for the best stories from public radio podcasts and independent radio producers...

Cassette From My Ex,” from WBEZ’s Eight Forty-Eight, July 2008.

Our first story today is a good introduction into the secret little worlds mix tapes can create in our lives. Producers of WBEZ’s Eight Forty-Eight worked with Found Magazine co-founder, Jason Bitner to create this run down of what people are thinking about when they’re making a mixtape.

You can find more from Eight Forty-Eight’s archives at their website

Interview with Artist Matt Delight, recorded in San Francisco, January 2015.

Matt Delight's mixtape cover art

When I first heard that last piece, I realized that I have people in my life with plenty to say about mixtapes too. But there’s one person who can really nail down why mixtapes seem to never completely disappear from popular culture. Matt Delight is an artist and illustrator here in San Francisco, an expert mixtape maker, and a dang good talker. I recently visited him in his home studio, and he explained to me just why mixtapes feel so personal and powerful, compared to mix CDs, or digital playlists.

Matt has made dozens of mixtapes over the years. You can see cover artwork for some of his tapes here, and be sure to check out his Instagram for even more visual goodness.

Office Music,” from the podcast How to Do Everything, January 2012.

Though I still make mixtapes to this day, I also recognize that’s not the only way to have that particular conversation about musical taste.

The podcast How to Do Everything lives up to its name. They’ve covered how to drive a rally car, tips to keep your cereal from going soggy, and even how to properly swim a lap. In this episode, hosts Mike Danforth and Ian Chillag help a man plan the perfect playlist for his workspace.

You can subscribe to the How to Do Everything podcast, now on iTunes.

This week's episode featured music from: Black Moth Super Rainbow, The Behoovers, David Bowie, The Jocks, and The Promise Ring.

If you have a suggestion for a podcast or an audio project we should feature, please drop us a line at thespot@kalw.org.

Tune in next week for a whole new episode of The Spot, only on KALW San Francisco.
