The Spot: Drawing the Second Line

Derek Bridges
Storyville Stompers Brass Band at the French Quarter Festival in New Orleans, 2010.

This week on KALW's showcase for the best stories from public radio podcasts and independent radio producers...

"Drums in the Distance," produced by Joshua Sirotiak for the Vocalo Story Tellers Workshop, October 2013.

Independent Radio Producer and Musician Joshua Sirotiak is trying to solve a mystery around the identity and history of an entire genre of music.

This story was produced as part of the Vocalo Story Tellers workshop. Vocalo is a public media organization and radio station, that connects culturally diverse audiences through music, stories, and training. They have a bunch of fantastic podcasts available, and you can find them all at their website, Vocalo.org.

Executive Director of the San Francisco Human Rights Commission Theresa Sparks.

"The Secret (and not so Secret) Life of Theresa Sparks," from the podcast Fugitive Waves, produced by The Kitchen Sisters, May 2015.

There is a musical beauty to all of the stories the Kitchen Sisters produce, and I’d like to share one that is especially important to San Francisco.

You can listen to a backlog of stories produced by The Kitchen Sisters at their website, and you can subscribe to their podcast Fugitive Waves on iTunes, or check it out at radiotopia.fm.

This week's episode featured music from: Black Moth Super Rainbow, Bells AtlasBen Best & Karl Jørgensen, Bobby Wells, and The Temptations.

If you have a suggestion for a podcast or an audio project we should feature, please drop us a line at thespot@kalw.org.

Tune in next week for another episode of The Spot, only on KALW San Francisco.
