Sights & Sounds Thanksgiving Picks

Myron G. Martin/PBS
The powerhouse vocalist Ledisi celebrates the songs of the legendary Nina Simone.

Sights and Sounds is your weekly guide the Bay Area arts scene through the eyes and ears of local artists. During the pandemic, we're offering suggestions for ways to experience art and culture from home and through social distancing. This week, host Jenee Darden and audio producer Precious Green share their picks for the  Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

Yo-Yo Ma & Kathryn Stott Songs of Comfort and Hope
Cal Performances at Home Concert presents this online concert by the legendary cellist and acclaimed pianist. The show was filmed this month during their performance at Taiwan’s National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts Concert Hall. The songs are inspired by music that Yo-Yo Ma recorded at his home during the beginning of the pandemic lockdown. Stream it until December 12th. Yo-Yo Ma’s new album, which debuts next month, is also titled Songs of Comfort and Hope.

Ledisi Live: A Tribute To Nina Simone
The Grammy-nominated singer from Oakland is tapping into her jazz roots for this PBS special, which honors the legendary Nina Simone. “Four Women,” and “I Put a Spell on You” are a few of Simone's classics that Ledisi belts out on this special. The program debuts on PBS Saturday, Nov. 28th. Visit PBS.org for details. Ledisi puts on a great show. If you ever get a chance to see her live, do it.

The Wizard of Oz at Fort Mason Flix
An upside to social distancing, aside from staying healthy, is that drive-in movies have made a comeback. This Sunday Fort Mason Flix in San Francisco is showing the classic The Wizard of Oz. Originally we reported that Dreamgirls would also be streaming, but it looks like that has changed to Trolls World Tour. But you can stream Dreamgirls on Amazon.
