Sights & Sounds: Lisa Forkish

Sights & Sounds is your weekly guide to the Bay Area arts scene. Singer, songwriter, and educator Lisa Forkish told KALW’s Jeneé Darden about three fantastic arts events happening around the Bay this weekend.

The 24th annual Collage des Cultures Africaines West African Dance Conference takes place this weekend at The Malonga Casquelourd Center for The Artsin Oakland. This is four days of master classes in music, dance and live performances by Bay Area dance companies. Diamano Coura Dance Company is hosting this conference. The fun begins Thursday and runs thru Sunday.

“People are coming from all over the country to teach, and to perform, and to participate.”

ROAR for Justice will host a  special screening of “Dolores,” the documentary about social justice and labor organizer, Dolores Huerta. The film screening is followed by a Q & A session with Huerta herself. " The event is a fundraiser for the Dolores Huerta Foundation. It takes place this Sunday, 12pm-3pm at the New Parkway Theatre in Oakland.

“We need her wisdom…it’s the time for taking notes from some of the elders who really paved the way.”

The Oakland's women's vocal ensemble Kitka is celebrating 40 years of music at their reunion concert Harmony & DissonanceThe group is known for performing melodies from Eastern Europe. Celebrate with them Sunday 7:30pm at the First Congressional Church of Oakland. 

“I love the idea of multi-generational events where they’re bringing back alumni of the group.”

 
Lisa Forkish is the Founder and Executive Director of the We Sing Vocal Festival & Concert which will be happening next weekend at Freight & Salvage in Berkeley. 
 

Jeneé Darden is an award-winning journalist, author, public speaker and proud Oakland native. She is the executive producer and host of the weekly arts segment Sights & Sounds as well as the series Sights + Sounds Magazine. Jeneé also covers East Oakland for KALW. Jeneé has reported for NPR, Marketplace, KQED, KPCC, The Los Angeles Times, Ebony magazine, Refinery29 and other outlets. In 2005, she reported on the London transit bombings for Time magazine. Prior to coming to KALW, she hosted the podcast Mental Health and Wellness Radio.
