Sights & Sounds: Carolina de Robertis

Sights & Sounds is your weekly guide to the Bay Area arts scene. KALW’s Jeneé Darden sat down with bestselling author Carolina de Robertis to talk about three arts events happening around the Bay Area this weekend.

"Africa State of Mind" is a traveling international exhibit making its one U.S. stop at the Museum of the African Diaspora in San Francisco. It features images by emerging African photographers, showing that Africa is just as much a mental space as it is a physical space. The exhibit runs through Nov. 15th.

Indómitas, which means untamable in Spanish, is a live podcast series featuring voices of "fierce women artists and activists." Guests include authors Mirna Ruiz and Lulu Reboyoso. They published the anthology "Mujeres Magicas." Join the conversation Friday night, 6pm at Brava's Cabaret in San Francisco.

Friday Nights at Oakland Museum is throwing their Hella Big 50th Anniversary party. The museum is taking their weekly Friday night event to another level with more music, dancing, food trucks, DJs, poetry, kids activities and more. Admission to the museum gallery is free and the party starts at 5pm.

Carolina de Robertis' latest novel is Cantoras. This Sunday, 4pm at Book Passage in Corte Madera, she’ll be speaking on a panel with other local authors about immigration in America.

Jeneé Darden is an award-winning journalist, author, public speaker and proud Oakland native. She is the executive producer and host of the weekly arts segment Sights & Sounds as well as the series Sights + Sounds Magazine. Jeneé also covers East Oakland for KALW. Jeneé has reported for NPR, Marketplace, KQED, KPCC, The Los Angeles Times, Ebony magazine, Refinery29 and other outlets. In 2005, she reported on the London transit bombings for Time magazine.
