Sights & Sounds is your weekly guide to the Bay Area arts scene. Cartoonist and educator Breena Nuñez Peralta told KALW’s Jeneé Darden about three fantastic arts events happening around the Bay this weekend.
 

Marvel’s animated film Spiderman: Into the Spider-verse is still swinging in theatres. Catch it for $5 dollars on Tuesdays at Regal Cinemas Jack London in Oakland. The movie introduces Miles Morales, a Spiderman from a different universe, to the big screen. Spiderman: Into the Spider-verse up for the Oscar's Best Animated Feature. 

“It’s great to see more youth getting really excited about these things, about comics specifically because there’s going to be characters who look like them in their community.”

Credit Ships in the Night

Ships in the Night is a queer dance party and Oakland-based organization that hosts arts fundraising events for local community projects. This Saturday night they're thowing  a benefit with proceeds going to a queer and transgender organization. It’s happening at Complex in Oakland.

The Global Barrio Meets Hi-Life electronic music partyis happening on Saturday February 1 at the Elbo Room in Oakland and Saturday, Feb 15  Bar Fluxs in San Francisco. Global Barriois a diverse art collective based out of Oakland. They throw live shows and parties in the Bay Area with the objective of diversifying electronic music. The parties bring a new wave of electronic music artists who combine traditional and indigenous rhythms from around the world with various electronic styles.  

“A lot of people still don’t know about the history, and I personally didn’t know until my fiancée was educating me on the roots of electronic music. This was always black music.”

2019 Peninsula Libraries Comic Arts Fest

You can check out Breena’s work this Saturday, February 2nd at the Peninsula Libraries Comics Arts Fest being held at the Foster City Library. The festival runs throughout February. 

 

Jeneé Darden is an award-winning journalist, author, public speaker and proud Oakland native. She is the executive producer and host of the weekly arts segment Sights & Sounds as well as the series Sights + Sounds Magazine. Jeneé also covers East Oakland for KALW. Jeneé has reported for NPR, Marketplace, KQED, KPCC, The Los Angeles Times, Ebony magazine, Refinery29 and other outlets. In 2005, she reported on the London transit bombings for Time magazine. Prior to coming to KALW, she hosted the podcast Mental Health and Wellness Radio.
