This week on Open Air, host David Latulippe talks with Austrian pianist Rudolf Buchbinder, a 1966 winner of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, who plays this week with the San Francisco Symphony as part of his 70th birthday grand tour, playing Mozart’s D minor piano concerto, No. 20, from 1785.

Also, a conversation with Nick Ishimaru, artistic director of Theatre of Yugen, which presents the West Coast premiere of ‘The Red Demon’, a modern drama by acclaimed Japanese playwright Hideki Noda, in which a mysterious stranger washes up on the shores of a small beach town after a violent storm and is believed to be a bloodthirsty demon from the sea.

Joen Madonna, Executive Director of ArtSpan stops by to discuss the 41st annual SF Open Studios event, the oldest and largest open studios program in the country. This month-long art event, held over four weekends in October and November, showcases over 800 emerging and established San Francisco artists in their studios.

Plus, San Francisco Opera’s Artistic Planning Manager Sean Waugh joins us to share details about the SF Opera Lab Pop-Up at Oasis on Halloween Eve, which promises to be a  night of ‘operatic debauchery with a touch of drag’, hosted by legendary drag artist Heklina.
