One Planet: The Rise In Deadly Attacks Against Land & Environmental Defenders

KEVIN MCELVANEY / GREENPEAC
Indigenous leaders from Brazil protest outside a corporate sustainability meeting in Germany, calling for the end of deforestation.

On this edition of Your Call’s One Planet Series, we're discussing the rise in deadly attacks against environmental activists around the world. According to Global Witness, 212 land and environmental defenders were killed in 2019, making it the deadliest year on record.

Governments around the world, from the US to the Philippines, have used the COVID crisis to strengthen draconian measures to control citizens and roll back hard fought environmental regulations. Agribusiness, oil, gas, and mining are the key drivers of these murders. What will it take to stop these deadly attacks?
