On November 4th, Oakland voters will pick their next mayor. All month on “Crosscurrents,” we are going to bring you the voices of each of the 15 people who are campaigning for the job.
Dan Siegel is a civil rights lawyer whose done everything from opening a storefront law collective in Fruitvale to serving on the Oakland school board. Siegel also advised current mayor of Oakland Jean Quan until he resigned in 2011. The reason? to protest what he called Quan's "tragically unnecessary" raid of the Occupy Oakland camp. He went on to join in the protest and he's considered by many to be the "Occupy" movement's candidate. KALW's Judy Silber spoke to Siegel about his vision for an Oakland in a time of intense change.
You know if I had been mayor during Occupy, I would have urged Mayor Quan to do precisely what I urged Mayor Quan to do. Which was to become part of Occupy.
