Did you know that this station’s license is owned by San Francisco Unified School District? That’s why we broadcast those school board meetings and read the school lunch menu every weekday morning. It’s also why our studios are at Burton High School which, as it turns out, is in the middle of a food desert. The nearest restaurant is a long walk and big hill away. There is one other option: the school’s cafeteria. We’ve talked about checking it out for years, but no one from KALW has ventured there. Until now. Throughout our spring membership campaign, we're featuring stories from the Burton High School cafeteria. Bon appetit!
Episode 01 - Getting there
Kevin Vance and the newsroom try to find the cafeteria
Episode 02 - Kevin eats - Kevin digs into the day’s offerings and serves up a review
Episode 03 - Angela investigates - KALW Deputy News Director Angela Johnston grills students on their faves and more
Episode 04 - Nutrition rocks - We get the skinny on nutrition from Burton’s Health Outreach Coordinator
Episode 05 - Charles remembers - We hear from a man who's worked in the kitchen at Burton High School for more than 30 years
Episode 06 - Jennifer explains - SFUSD's head of nutrition services joins KALW's general manager for a chat about how meals are developed and what's next
