Life lessons flow at Upstar Records

Oct 17, 2017

Upstar Records is a professional music studio within Sunset Youth Services, a support program for youth and their families. This weekend the label showcases the work of young artists with the release of the album "Life Is Not a Game."

The music highlights the struggles young people face growing up without privilege. It's a collaboration of many artists who participate in the community-building work at the drop-in program located at 3918 Judah Street in San Francisco's Outer Sunset neighborhood.

The release party, with music, visual arts, food and drink, takes place this Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. as part of ArtSpan's Open Studios.

In this edition of Bay Area Beats, we'll meet two of the rappers and a sound engineer who contributed to the compilation.

"The environment here is very welcoming. Very. I've had a lot of issues, especially this past summer. All the staff, they've helped me out through those situations. They've been there for me. They've been there a lot." — Malachi 'Mali' Salaam
