KALW Seeks People Who Have Experienced Incarceration For Community Advisory Board

Apr 20, 2020

Note: These positions have been filled. Please reach out to uncuffed@kalw.org to be considered for the board in future years.

KALW is looking for a few individuals to join a new community advisory board for our prison radio project.  We are particularly focused on including people who have experienced incarceration, and others who have been involved in the carceral system. The board’s role will be to provide us guidance on navigating interpersonal and institutional situations, as well as give occasional editorial and programmatic feedback. The board will help us stay true to our mission to teach incarcerated people, and to provide them with a media platform. The deadline to apply is May 4.

KALW has been working inside San Quentin since 2013, teaching journalism, radio production, and helping edit radio stories produced by incarcerated men. We began a program at Solano State Prison in 2018. The radio stories air on KALW radio 91.7 in San Francisco, and are published on our website, www.kalw.org. In the fall of 2019, we also launched a podcast called Uncuffed. Our training program is funded by The California Arts Council’s Arts in Corrections program.

You might be the right person if you:
-Support greater visibility for the voices and perspectives of incarcerated people.
-Are thoughtful, inquisitive, and eager to lend your expertise.
-Can be available for occasional unscheduled emails and phone calls, when situations arise which we need urgent advice on (approximately 2 hours a month).
-Can attend in-person meetings twice a year in the SF Bay Area.
-Are a good communicator—ideally both verbally and in writing.
-Have consistent phone, email and internet access.
-Can keep conversations confidential.
-Are not personally connected with any of our program participants.
-Have participated in rehabilitative programs.
-Understand the challenges inherent in operating a program inside a prison.
-Bonus if you are familiar with media or journalism.

Although this is the first year, so the board will evolve as we learn, we expect the total time commitment to be approximately 28 hours in total (an average of 2+ hours/month).

Each advisor will be paid $1,800 for the year, with payments every 6 months. A one-year commitment is expected, with a possibility of renewal for a 2nd year.

Please be aware—these positions are not on-ramps to future employment at KALW, or a way to learn radio skills. You would be an advisor to, and supporter of the program. We would credit you publicly for your participation.

If you are interested, please contact us at uncuffed@kalw.org or (510)871-‪3146‬. If you know someone you think would be good for this position, please pass this on, or let us know!
