Shadow Master, Larry Reed

Larry Reed is a master of shadow puppetry. He learned the craft the traditional way in Bali in the 1970’s.

Since then his company, Shadowlight Productions, has developed its own style, using cinematic elements and contemporary theater and dance styles to modernize the work and make it accessible to a wide audience. KALW’s Jen Chien spoke with Reed about collaborating with artists from other cultures to create theater that bridges understanding between all people.

REED: I think shadows in particular have a different impact than anything else does because it's different than cartoons, different than film, different than other forms of theatre. It’s kind of like a dream and it hits you in that same place in the back of your head that dreams come from.

You can see Reed’s new work based on a Persian tale, Feathers of Fire, starting this Saturday January 16th through Monday at the Cowell Theatre in Fort Mason.
