The commercial sexual exploitation of children, or CSEC, can mean a lot of things including forced prostitution, pornography or the sex trafficking of minors.

The FBI has listed the San Francisco metropolitan area as a "high intensity" area for child prostitution. And a lot of that activity takes place in Oakland.

CYNTHIA DIMON: We'd see certain behaviors, or kids would disappear and wouldn't be in school, and we got concerned about it.

Cynthia Dimon is the CSEC lead for the the Oakland Unified School District. District officials had noticed that some of their students were being exploited outside of school. So Dimon trains staff to support students and to address the issue in the classroom.

She spoke with KALW's Liz Mak to discuss Oakland Unified's approach.
