In global journalism, local women know best

Reporter Cristi Hegranes trains women around the world to take control of their stories.

Hegranes was an international correspondent for Village Voice when she had a realization: As a foreigner, she wasn't always getting the full story. She thought if locals could do the reporting instead, international coverage could be more nuanced.

CRISTI HEGRANES: I didn’t want to be part of this mass machine that was disseminating the classic developing world information: war, poverty, disaster, disease.

That's when she started the Global Press Institute, a nonprofit that trains women around the world as journalists. It then employs them to report on their own communities for its publication, Global Press Journal. Ten years later, the Institute now employs 150 women in 26 countries from Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
