Dr. Marci Bowers

Dr. Marci Bowers is an OBGYN with a practice in Burlingame, and she's a global leader in her field. She also may be the first gender reassignment surgeon to have undergone the surgery herself.

22 years into marriage as a husband and father, Bowers went through gender transition. And today, she's performed the surgery 1500 times all over the world. Her work also includes clitoral reconstruction—using plastic surgery to help women who've undergone female genital cutting. KALW’sHana Baba visited Dr. Bower in her Burlingame office, and asked her first to describe the cultural tradition.

Dr. Bowers: The poor patient with her legs open, looks down and the doctor's eyes are a mix of horror and bewilderment- that they don't really know what they're looking at.
