On the surface, life didn't seem too different from any other weekend day at the end of the N-Judah MUNI line in San Francisco's Outer Sunset district. Hook Fish had a takeout line stretching up the street, people congregated in the parklet fronting Trouble Coffee. And on a warm, relatively windless day, surfers and sunbathers crowded Ocean Beach.

While some groups did not heed the recommended six-foot social distancing rule, others wore face masks and donned complete body coverings. Popular gathering places including 3 Fish Studios and Sunset Youth Services were shut down. The area beckoned visitors as a break from the shelter-in-place rule, but as this collection of photos shows, despite surface appearances this was not actually an ordinary day at the beach.
