Host Joseph Pace delves into the Mission District’s colorful political, cultural and artistic history with author, professor and San Francisco native, Cary Cordova.

In her new book, “The Heart of the Mission: Latino Art and Politics in San Francisco,” Cordova establishes the Mission District as home to a significant but largely ignored movement in Latino arts.

How did Latino artists contribute to San Francisco’s Beat community of the 1950s?  What was their response to wars in Central America and to the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s?  And, how is today’s Mission reacting to gentrification and lack of affordable housing?

Guest:

Dr. Cary Cordova, author of “The Heart of the Mission: Latino Art and Politics in San Francisco”; associate professor in the department of American Studies and an affiliate of the Center for Mexican American Studies at University of Texas at Austin.
