Towns and counties vote for local control… Oklahoma still suing neighbors… Columbia legalizes medical marijuana… Concentrates are medicinal…  What “Trumbo” doesn’t tell you… and more.

LEGALIZATION & LEGISLATION

Dispensary bans in Orange County seen as a “place holder”  // Orange County Register  Towns in Orange County – and throughout California —see these steps as a way to preserve local control before state rules go into effect.

Wrong date listed for statewide medical marijuana rules // Ukiah Daily Journal  “A March 1, 2016 deadline written into the state’s new Medical Marijuana Regulation and Safety Act asking counties and cities to adopt local cultivation regulations or automatically deliver local control to the state is incorrect, according to one California legislator.”

So when does it happen? “As an urgency measure, the law will go into effect as soon as it is signed by the governor,” says Assemblyman Jim Wood.

Oklahoma pursues charges against Colorado // MJ Biz Daily   Oklahoma and Nebraska “filed a lawsuit a year ago alleging that Colorado’s rec law does direct harm to both their states by increasing the illegal flow of cannabis through their borders. The two asked the high court to nullify the law.”

The Obama administration suggested last week that the court not consider the matter.

COPS & COURTS

Lynnette Shaw targeted by DOJ, again // East Bay Express  An appeal was filed last week to block Shaw from re-opening her Marin Alliance of Medical Marijuana dispensary, considered to be the first licensed dispensary in California. This is in direct violation of a court ruling ordering the Department of Justice to stop harassing dispensaries. The DOJ doesn’t quite see it that way.

BUSINESS

Oakland investment incubator helps growers, too // OaklandNorth  Most cannabis investment firms shy away from businesses that “touch the plant” (as the saying goes). Not Gateway, Inc., which announced operations last week.

East Bay dispensaries work with police  // SF Gate  Detectives were seen removing boxes from prominent Berkeley cannabis dispensaries last week. It wasn’t a raid, though. They were shuttling gifts donated for the police holiday toy drive.

HEALTH

Concentrates qualify as medical in California // Sacramento Bee  “A unanimous three-justice panel of the 3rd District Court of Appeal disagreed this week with an earlier ruling by El Dorado Superior Court Judge James R. Wagoner and reversed the judge’s decision that a medical marijuana patient violated probation by possessing concentrated cannabis.”

Medical marijuana now legal in Columbia // Associated Press via Yahoo News  “Colombia's President Juan Manuel Santos is legalizing the cultivation and sale of marijuana for medical and scientific purposes.”

OPINION

It’s just plain wrong to legalize marijuana // Contra Costa Times  “Marijuana is a dangerous drug, with proven ability to destroy the brains of our youth and inflict irreparable harm on our natural resources.”

IN OTHER NEWS….

Trumbo” film omits pot  // Cannabis Culture  “Although it’s acceptable for Bryan Cranston to play a meth manufacturer (in “Breaking Bad”), and pop Benzedrine playing Trumbo in the film, for some reason it was deemed necessary to omit Trumbo’s time in Mexico and the marijuana he smoked there, and afterwards.”  Here’s the untold story.

The Season of Lists // East Bay Express  The year in numbers, compiled by David Downs. For example: Nearly half of all U.S. medical cannabis sales are in California, where an estimated 40,000 pot farms exist.
