Bay Area Beats: Gilberto Rodriguez y Los Intocables

Fernando Rodriguez
Gilberto Rodriguez y Los Intocables

Gilberto Rodriguez y Los Intocables is an eclectic Chicano band that can’t quite be defined by one genre. That’s why they call themselves “Los Intocables” or The Untouchables, a sound defying borders and labels.
Their recent album release, “Sabor Maracuya Desnuda” honors the Bay Area’s lexicon of rumba, psychedelic rock, and Chicano soul while charting new musical territory. It’s an invitation to get people jamming in the streets.

"This is the most important time to play music that reflects our heritage, culture, and where we come from."

In this edition of Bay Area Beats, bandleader Daniel Rodriguez and pianist Ruben Sandoval talk about the revival of traditional Afro-Latin rhythms and what it means to make joyful music in the era of Trump.

You can catch Gilberto Rodriguez y Los Intocables at the Legionnaire Saloon this Friday in Oakland.
