BAM/PFA // It's the first Thursday of the month, which means you can visit the public galleries of the Berkeley Art Museum & Pacific Film Archive atno charge. DETAILS: 11am - 5pm, 2626 Bancroft Way, Berkeley. COST: Free.

Yerba Buena Fest // The Family Crest is one of my favorite local bands. They have a free lunchtime show today. It's part of the Yerba Buena GardensFestival. National Donut Day // Stop by a KrispyKremelocation in the East Bay and get a free doughnut. They'll probably even give you one if you spell it "donut." Doh!  DETAILS: Check for participating KrispyKreme stores. COST: Free.

Saturday

Book Event // Quick: how many "islands" are in San Francisco Bay?  Photographer James Martin says there are 48. He'll explain in apresentation based on his book. DETAILS:  2pm, SF Public Library, Visitation Valley branch, 201 Leland Ave. San Francisco. COST: Free. 

Free Folk Fest // The 37th AnnualFree Folk Festival takes place this weekend in San Francisco. There are scores of workshops and performances on Saturday and Sunday. KALW will have a table near the entrance. "Folk Music & Beyond" host Joann Mar will be working the table early Saturday afternoon, and I take over mid-afternoon. Stop and pick up a bumper sticker or program guide on your way to one of the events. DETAILS: Saturday & Sunday, noon - 10pm, Presidio Middle School, 450 30th Ave., San Francisco. COST: Free - but donations are welcome.

Sunday

Open Studios // East BayOpen Studios takes place this weekend. The Oakland Tribune says it's "One of the best forums around for Bay Area artists and art lovers to meet." DETAILS: Various locations. See website fora directory. COST: Free.
