Anand Giridharadas: Wealthy elites "giving back" won't change systems of inequality

On this edition of Your Call, we speak with Anand Giridharadas about his new book, Winners Take All, which exposes the contradiction of wealthy change agents pushing solutions that leave the systems that allowed them to get rich – at others’ expense – untouched.

Philanthropists constantly talk about changing the world by using market-based “win-win” solutions. Giridharadas says elites embrace ways of thinking that focus on the victim, but leave the perpetrator unnamed and unaccountable. What can be done to end this charade and embrace real solutions to the world’s most difficult problems?

Guest:

Anand Giridharadas, writer, former columnist and correspondent for The New York Times, on-air political analyst for NBC News and MSNBC, visiting scholar at the Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute at New York University, and author of Winners Take All: The Elite Charade of Changing the World
