On this day, Feb 6, 1870, Jonathan Jasper Wright was elected to the South Carolina Supreme Court.

Feb 6, 1898  Melvin B. Tolson, author, educator, poet, was born

Inez Maxine Pitter Haynes was born February 06, 1919.  As with her sisters, she had struggled in the University of Washington both because of the Great Depression and racial discrimination.  Undaunted, Inez switched majors in her junior year and graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in sociology in 1941.  She left Seattle to attend the Lincoln School of Nursing in New York, where she received her nursing degree.  Years later in 1971, with two nursing degrees and extensive professional experience, Inez Maxine Pitter Haynes became an assistant professor of nursing at the University of Washington, the same school that denied her access to its nursing school.  In 1976 she left to teach at Seattle Pacific University, where she remained until she retired in 1981.  Inez Maxine Pitter Haynes died in 2004.  

Feb 6, 1933 Walter E. Fauntroy was born in Washington, D.C. He went on to become a District of Columbia delegate to the House of Representatives.

Feb 6, 1961  Jail-in movement started in Rock Hill, S.C., when students refused to pay fines and requested jail sentences. Students Nonviolent Coordinating Committee urged south-wide "Jail, No Bail" campaign.  

Feb 6, 1972 Robert Lewis Douglas founder and coach of the Rens, is inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Tennis player Arthur Ashe dies on this day, February 6, 1993. Ashe was the first African American to win at Wimbledon.

Ronald V. Dellums resigned from his seat in Congress on February 6, 1998.  His resignation prompted a special election which sent Barbara Lee to Congress from his district. 

Norma Merrick Sklarek, died on this day, February 6, 2012 in Los Angeles, California.  As a Black female, Sklarek became a well-respected project director and educator within the white male dominated field of architecture.  Sklarek been called "The Rosa Parks of Architecture"
