Audiograph’s Sound of the Week: The Alley's Rod Dibble

Colin Peden

[Editor's note: Following the death of The Alley's iconic pianist Rod Dibble in December 2017, we at KALW News are re-posting this classic Audiograph of a visit to the famed Oakland piano bar.]

All week long, we've been playing this soundand asking you to guess what exactly it is and where exactly in the Bay Area we recorded it.

This auditory guessing game is part of Audiograph, a crowd-sourced collaborative radio project mapping the Bay Area’s sonic signature. Audiograph tells the story of where you live, and the people who live there with you. Every Thursday, we tell you the story behind our weekly mystery sound on Crosscurrentsand here in weekly blog posts.

Listen above for the full answer...

Ben Benjamin: I walked in and there were people doing these songs that I had been listening to for half my life, and keeping them alive by singing them. I was delighted.
