Day 8: San Francisco's Coronavirus Shutdown In Pictures

The Bay Area's shelter-in-place ordinance reached its second week, and residents seem to be getting used to a new rhythm. It's largely slower, with very little street traffic, empty buses and trains, and take-out businesses struggling to draw customers.

This collection of photos shows a variety of perspectives. In the Outer Noriega shopping district, Devil's Teeth Bakery had its full menu in place, though its popular parklet was closed. Electrical workers had to violate the six-foot social distancing recommendation in order to do their jobs. Garbage collectors had to deal with the discards of people staying at home. In downtown San Francisco, boutique retailers were boarded up. And somebody with chalk and a jump rope made a point on Bernal Hill.

I joined KALW in 2004. As Executive News Editor and then News Director, I helped our news department win numerous regional and national awards for long- and short-form journalism. I've also helped create numerous training programs — for teenagers, incarcerated people, and early-career journalists — and have taught hundreds of audio producers. I served as interim Executive Director for nearly two years. My work is currently focused on creating original live events, programming, and building partnerships with like-minded organizations.
