Apply for KALW's Summer High School Podcasting Institute
The Institute will include a select cohort of high school students who will receive guidance in a small group setting exploring how issues dominating the U.S election are impacting young people’s lives. Instruction will be conducted through video conferencing, and if public health measures allow, then in-person meetings will take place as well.
Participants will build on story ideas and themes tied to social justice — such as racism heightened by the coronavirus outbreak, access to healthcare, transportation issues, and climate change — to create podcasts and radio pieces that will be heard by a broad audience. During the Institute, students will develop the skills to create high-quality work in a rapidly-expanding area of media production where youth voices are underrepresented.
Topics covered in training and production will include:
● Listening and reading comprehension ● Pitching stories ● Recording audio ● Finding audio sources ● Researching ● Interviewing ● Writing ● Voicing
With the guidance of a direct instructor along with KALW staff, students in the Institute will create stories for a six-part podcast series about youth and the election, to be distributed in September and October of 2020.
