Titus Andronicus - Rime of the Ancient Mariner - The 39 Steps - Obama Netflix documentary

Eileen Fisher

This week on Open Air, KALW’s radio magazine for the Bay Area performing arts, host David Latulippe talks with English theatre artist Tina Taylor in her capacity as artistic director of Theatre Lunatico, about the company’s production of Shakespeare’s bloody tragedy, Titus Andronicus, which opens on August 30.

Under Taylor’s direction, this Titus Andronicusbecomes an exploration of the devastating impact of systemic oppression, under the lens of our current political crisis. Performances are at La Val’s Subterranean Theater (1834 Euclid Ave.) in Berkeley, through September 29.

From theater company Word for Word, we talk with Bay Area veteran stage actor Charles Shaw Robinson, who plays the part of the Ancient Mariner in the company’s immersive production of the legendary Rime of the Ancient Marinerby English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772 - 1834). Co-director Jim Cave joins the conversation. This is Word for Word’s first time performing an epic poem. The production opens on September 21 and runs through October 12 at Z Space (450 Florida St.) in San Francisco.

Actor Ron Campbell stops by, to share details about the production at TheatreWorks Silicon Valley of the Olivier Award winning comedy The 39 Steps, in which he is one of the four actors who together play more than 100 different parts.

This outlandish comic thriller turns the Hitchcock movie classic on its head in a hilarious spoof full of chicanery, espionage, dastardly murders, double-crossing secret agents, and devastatingly beautiful women. The 39 Steps runs through September 15 at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts (500 Castro St.) in Mountain View.

Plus, Open Air’s regular contributor and critic at large, Peter Robinson, discusses the first documentary produced by Barack and Michelle Obama for Netflix, called American Factory, about what happened when a Chinese company took over a General Motors factory in Ohio that closed after the 2008 financial crisis.

Also, a preview of what is on screen this Fall.
